What Most Preachers Don't Tell Us About The Holy Spirit

About the Holy Spirit — what most Bible preachers don't tell us about the Holy Spirit

Having knew the thought of the Pharisees, Jesus seized the opportunity to give extra caution to them, and of course to us all, not to think the Spirit of God was like him.

The statement Jesus made on that day brought us to a realization that Holy Spirit is quite different — in fact, "far far" different — from God the Father and God the Son.

If you really know God the Father and God the Son quite well, and you relate to Holy Spirit the same way you relate to them, in no time, you will realize you've beaten more than you can chew.

From this expository and thought-provoking post, you will learn a lot of things that most Bible preachers don't tell us — or forget to tell us — about the 3rd triune God, Holy Spirit.

First, let me show you something fascinating in the Bible.

Judges 9:7-15

7 Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and cried out. And he said to them:

“Listen to me, you men of Shechem,
That God may listen to you!

8 “The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them.
And they said to the OLIVE TREE,
‘Reign over us!’

9 But the olive tree said to them,
‘Should I cease giving my oil,
With which they honor God and men,
And go to sway over trees?’

10 “Then the trees said to the FIG TREE,
‘You come and reign over us!’

11 But the fig tree said to them,
‘Should I cease my sweetness and my good fruit,
And go to sway over trees?’

12 “Then the trees said to the VINE,
‘You come and reign over us!’

13 But the vine said to them,
‘Should I cease my new wine,
Which cheers both God and men,
And go to sway over trees?’

14 “Then all the trees said to the bramble,
‘You come and reign over us!’

15 And the bramble said to the trees,
‘If in truth you anoint me as king over you,
Then come and take shelter in my shade;
But if not, let fire come out of the bramble
And devour the cedars of Lebanon!’

This parable you read above was given by Jotham after 69 of his brothers were killed by Abimelech, another brother of his.

Of course, you know that even though all these 71 children came from different mothers, they were all the children of Gideon known as Jerubbaal.

The Bible made us understand that only the mother of Abimelech was a not a wife to Gideon. Abimelech's mother was a concubine to him.

As you know the story quite well, Abimelech killed all his brothers so that he could reign alone as King.

Fortunately for Jotham, he escaped while Abimelech was killing his other brothers.

Now, to the exact place I wanted to show you...

Jotham went to the top of Mount Gerizim and gave out a parable so that every of his father's relative in Shechem supporting Abimelech could hear him.

Undisputably, the incident of the killing of his 69 brothers on a single stone was a horrible one, but that is not what we are up to. It is the parable Jotham shared that matters to us at this point.

To draw your attention to the fascinating part of this parable is why I underlined, bolded and red-colored some texts.

To reiterate, the parable started with OLIVE TREE, the other trees came to it to beseech it to rule over them as King. Olive refused for the sole reason of its function of honoring God and man with its oil.

After Olive refusal, they came to meet FIG TREE. which turned down their offer, as well.

Moving on, they approached THE VINE, and it turned down their royal offer, too, for the sole reason of its function of cheering God and man with its wine.

Wine cheers God and man Judges 9:13 that means the Almighty God enjoys wine

Of course, every parable you see in the Bible is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. Therefore, the meaning of this parable is far beyond the different trees mentioned in it.

To avoid much diversion, the parable makes us realize the oil that comes from Olive tree honors God and man.

Isn't that true?

The anointing oil in the Bible comes from Olive tree, and it is used to bring down the anointing of God upon man. In other words, it honors God and man.

Then, the parable went further to explain why the Vine refused to accept to be king over other trees. His refusal was based on the fact that its product, wine, cheers God and man.

That means the wine that comes from the Vine is pleasured by God and man.

Not to leave you astonished and confused at the same time, the English Bible used the word "cheer," which comes from the Hebrew word שָׂמַח (saw-makh')...meaning to take pleasure in or simply to enjoy something.

In a layman's terms, the Almighty God (God the Father) enjoys wine...that is what the Bible was implying there. Now, stay with me to understand this better.

That statement that God enjoys wine sounds odd to a lot of christians because we've been told over and over again, over the years, that God eats and drinks nothing but praise.

That's sounds good, but I'm sorry to disappoint you...to say God eats and drinks praise is unbiblical. There is no where in the Bible such fallacy is stated.

The very first time someone pointed out this parable to me and asked me if God really enjoys wine, I replied the person with an emphatic YES.

But why would I say that as a Bible scholar?

You see this issue of whether Jotham was referring to God drinking wine or not shouldn't pose any problem to those of us who are students of the Bible.

Whenever people come up with this attitude of God does not eat or drink, I tell them to read Genesis 18.

THE LORD, AS GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE THE SON & HOLY SPIRIT APPEARED TO ABRAHAM

Do you know as many people believe that it was Angels that visited Abraham...that was a lie?

See Genesis 18:1 below...

Then the LORD appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.

Can you see the person the Bible says appeared to Abraham?

When I check the Hebrew Bible for the word translated there as LORD in Genesis 18:1, here is what I saw...

יְהֹוָה

In case you don't understand Hebrew, that is JEHOVAH... I mean Yahweh.

Now, continue reading the Genesis 18 below...

2 So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,

3 and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant.

4 Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.

5 And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant.”

They said, “Do as you have said.”

6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.”

7 And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it.

8 So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, AND SET IT BEFORE THEM; and HE STOOD BY THEM under the tree AS THEY ATE.

After reading this Bible passage, some people said but it was 3 men who appeared to Abraham.

Anytime I hear that, I remind them of why God used the plural phrase of "let us" make man in "our" own image in Genesis 1:26.

It sounds unbelievable. But truth be told, it was God who visited Abraham and ate bread, butter, milk with calf meat under the terebinth tree.

The Lord appeared to Abraham and ate bread, butter, milk and calf meat under a terebinth tree.

Shocking right?

I didn't come up with that... That was what the Bible says.

You see this is why I don't premeditate anything in my mind when reading the Bible. I simply accept whatever the Bible says and not just what pastor, prophet, teacher or people tell me.

In fact, I was not surprised that Jesus loved drinking wine when he came to the earth... Don't forget that Jesus is God, too.

In fact, at a point when Jesus was talking to the multitude about John the Baptist that people thought he had a demon because they never saw him eat or drink. But Jesus came EATING & DRINKING, and they called him a glutton and a winebibber.

Luke 7:34

The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

Then, Jesus told his disciples before he died for our sins...

Matthew 26:29

But I say to you, I will not drink of this FRUIT OF THE VINE from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

That is to tell you that in case you are thinking that drinking of wine ends on earth, the statement of Jesus to his disciples revealed and confirmed drinking of wine will continue in the Father's kingdom.

Jesus promised to drink wine with his disciples in the Father's kingdom

With all you've learnt here, hope you are no longer confused as per the parable of Jotham?

And hope you've now confirmed that God indeed enjoys wine?

Now, follow me carefully...

For the fact that one knows this surprising and shocking fact I just revealed about God the Father and God the Son does not mean what you know relate to the Holy Spirit.

I told you at the beginning of this christian article that Holy Spirit is quite different — in fact, "far far" different — from God the Father and God the Son.

Unlike God the Father and God the Son that like and enjoy wine, Holy Spirit detests it.

THIS CAN MAKE ANYONE HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

How do I mean?

If you really like wine, you will have problems with the Holy Spirit.

This is why anytime a child that would be full of the Holy Spirit would be born, there was always an instruction of not to drink wine by the mother or the child from the Angel of God.

For Samson...

Judges 13:3-4

And the Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, "Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.

4 Now therefore, please BE CAREFUL NOT TO DRINK WINE OR SIMILAR DRINK, and not to eat anything unclean.

For John the Baptist...

Luke 1:11-15

11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, AND SHALL DRINK NEITHER WINE NOR STRONG DRINK. HE WILL ALSO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, EVEN FROM HIS MOTHER'S WOMB.

This is why I tell people that if they like wine, they will have problems with the Holy Spirit.

This reminds me of Holy Communion. A lot of christians ask me that if the Holy Spirit hates wine, why then did Jesus tell us to do Holy Communion in remembrance of him, after all, Holy Communion consists of bread and wine?

To answer this question, read what Jesus said in Matthew 26:26-28 below...

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took BREAD, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; THIS IS MY BODY."

27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "DRINK from it, all of you.

28 FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

This is to tell you that Holy Communion is not really drinking of wine. As you know, that wine changes spiritually to the BLOOD OF JESUS the moment is consecrated for the service of the Holy Communion.

That's why we warn sinners not take it.

In fact, people who take it in their sinful life testify to the fact that it brought serious stomach upset and disruption to their body system.

So, it's not wine that you drink during Holy Communion, it is simply the blood of the lamb.

Second, we know a lot about God the Father and God the Son.

For God the Father, there are several of his names right in the Bible. Even for God the Son, we have several of his names in the Bible, too.

What of their images?

I mean their appearance... Moses saw the back of God the Father in...Exodus 33:20-23

20 But He said, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live."

21 And the Lord said, "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock.

22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by.

23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen."

And Moses, Nadab, Abihu with the the 70 elders of Israel saw the feet of God the Father in...Exodus 24:9-11

9 Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel,

10 and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity.

11 But on the nobles of the children of Israel He did not lay His hand. So they saw God, and they ate and drank.

Moses, Nadab, Abihu and the 70 elders of Israel saw the back of God.

For Jesus Christ, he, even, lived among men. People saw him face to face, he ate and drank with men, he walked and slept around them. In fact, people thronged on him and touched his clothes.

On the contrary, for the Holy Spirit, he doesn't like to reveal anything about himself.

That is why no one has seen how the Holy Spirit looks. No one can tell of what he really looks like.

Don't be carried away by the fact that he is called Spirit, he is as real, person, as God the Father and God the Son... He is more real than we think.

From all we've read about him in the Bible, he is not just a wind as some people think of him, he is a real personality.

But you will never see the description of what he looks like in or out of the Bible because he doesn't like to reveal anything about himself.

Even his name, no one knows it.

To surprise you more, everything, I mean absolutely everything, we know about the Holy Spirit was revealed to us about God the Father and God the Son. You will never hear him talk about himself.

Then, third and lastly...

Moving on to the very one Bible preachers tell us about the Holy Spirit...

HERE IS NOW WHAT MOST BIBLE PREACHERS TELL US ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

HE DOES NOT FORGIVE PEOPLE ANY SIN MADE AGAINST HIM.

Matthew 12:25, 31-32

25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them...

31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

I pray...

May we not find ourselves in a state of everlasting regret for being endowed with the Spirit of God.

AMEN.
